The Story of These Women:
At times of hunger, disease and poor living conditions breed prostitution. Foreign exposurists facilitated by the FOCUS, Inc. staff witnessed their living conditions and report the following: "Three women and infants living in a small room rented at (P 1,000.00) one thousand pesos a month with no windows. The house; only a shack, covered with pieces of used corrugated iron sheets serving as roof and pieces of used plywoods lined up as floors. Water is (P3.00) three pesos per bucket and no electricity. When it rains, everything floats and people become like wet, cold rats with nowhere to go, waiting for the earth to dry up. If one could call this a house it is unbelievable."
"If they do not have money to buy milk/food for their children they go to the streets of Cubao, Quezon Avenue or bars in Commonwealth Avenue to pick up costumers."
Do they have a choice? Yes but given very limited opportunities such as education and access to resources, they will entertain even the risk of prostitution just to be able to eat well, and sleep well with a roof over their heads. |
