Holistic organizing with prostituted women in the Philippines is still relatively new when the Friendly Organization for Community Understanding and Support, Inc. started the journey with the women. FOCUS, Inc. then, is one of the organizations in Luzon that advocated and supported strongly the plight of prostituted women and children. People both members of the church and from the society at large are not too often judgmental to these women/children. They refer to them as simply the sum of their genitals, dangerous women who should be kept AIDS-free and STI-free to protect their clients. They are the modern Magdalene who have fallen into and given in to the call of the flesh, branded as lazy women who could not afford to lift their fingers and stretch their muscles to earn decent living but instead opted to go to the streets and bars to earn their bread and butter.
With this in mind, FOCUS, Inc. launched this project to guide people and empower them of the real issues behind the "flesh trade£ and the root cause of prostitution. The organization is convinced that to understand and emphatize with the women is to meet them at the crossroads of their being "sinned against" their prostitutedness as a matter of course in ushering them towards Jesus Christ. |
